Your own trailer or a professional horse transporter: how to choose
The question often comes up among owners who start transporting their horse regularly: invest in a trailer, or always use a transporter?
Your own trailer: an investment that pays off with frequent use
A trailer means buying the equipment, maintaining it, taking out dedicated insurance, and often having a suitable towing vehicle. This choice makes sense for regular use, such as frequent competitions or repeated yard moves, rather than for an occasional trip.
The professional transporter: no equipment to manage
Using a transporter spares you the maintenance, the question of the right driving licence for towing, and the driving itself over long distances. It is the simplest option for a one-off trip, a move, or international transport that involves specific paperwork.
The middle ground: shared transport
When several horses are going in the same direction, a transporter shares the lorry and splits the cost between the people who asked. It is often the cheapest option for a long-distance trip, as long as you are flexible on dates.
What stays the same, whatever you choose
The horse's identification document is required in every case. See our article on the documents required to transport a horse. For an international trip, the same health formalities apply, whether the trailer is yours or a transporter's.
There is no right choice in the abstract: the one that counts is the one that matches how often you really travel.
