The essential equipment for transporting a sport horse

A sport horse travelling to a competition deserves slightly more complete protective equipment than for an occasional trip. Here are the essentials usually recommended.

Travel protection

Travel boots or bandages, covering from the knee to the hoof, protect against knocks and scrapes. Hock boots and, depending on the horse, a poll guard and a tail guard complete the kit for long trips or for horses that are nervous when loading.

A rug suited to the season

Neither too warm nor too light: the idea is to stop the horse sweating too much in the trailer while protecting him from the cold on arrival, especially after the effort of a competition that follows the journey.

A travel first aid kit

Disinfectant, dressings, a pair of scissors, and what you need to remove a boot or bandage quickly if there is an injury. The idea is not to replace a vet, but to be able to act in the first few minutes while waiting for professional advice if needed.

Documents and paperwork

The horse's identification document, competition licence and papers, and for international trips the specific health documents: gathering these before departure avoids last-minute stress at loading.
