How long can a horse travel without a break?

For domestic horses, water must be offered at least every 8 hours of transport. This benchmark shapes how long journeys are organised, especially international ones.

The driver's driving time, a related benchmark

The European regulation on driving time requires a 45-minute break after 4 hours 30 minutes at the wheel. In practice, this break also benefits the horse: it is often when a transporter checks the load and offers water.

For a standard trip within France

Most trips within France are done in one go, in a single day, without the question of a long break really coming up. Stops become a central question beyond 400 to 500 km, or as soon as a border crossing is added.
